How Google Ads actually works — and how not to waste your budget

Google Ads is an auction that runs billions of times a day. Understanding how it determines who shows up — and who pays what — is the difference between a campaign that returns RM5 for every RM1 spent and one that drains your budget on the wrong audience.

The ad auction: it's not just the highest bid

When someone searches on Google, an automated auction runs in milliseconds. Your ad's position is determined by Ad Rank — a combination of your maximum bid, your Quality Score (how relevant your ad and landing page are to the search), and your expected impact. A highly relevant ad with a RM2 bid can outrank a poorly matched ad at RM5. Quality wins over budget every time.

Search vs Display vs Performance Max

Search ads appear when someone actively types a relevant query — highest intent, best for direct conversions. Display ads are banner images across the Google Display Network — good for awareness. Performance Max uses AI to show ads across all Google channels automatically. For most Malaysian SMEs starting out, Search campaigns deliver the clearest, most controllable results.

Conversion tracking: the most important setup step

Without conversion tracking, you're flying blind. You can see clicks and impressions — but not which keywords actually produced an enquiry, phone call or sale. Google's smart bidding strategies (Target CPA, Maximise Conversions) are useless without conversion data to learn from. Setting up tracking via Google Tag Manager is the first thing we do before spending a single ringgit on ads.

Realistic budgets for Malaysian businesses

Google Ads costs vary enormously by industry. Legal, financial and property keywords can cost RM20–60 per click in Malaysia; retail and F&B can be RM0.50–3. We recommend RM500–1,000/month ad spend to gather meaningful data and see results within 4–6 weeks. Below RM300/month it's hard to run statistically valid tests. The management fee covers strategy and optimisation; ad spend goes directly to Google.

Negative keywords: the most underused tool

Just as important as what you bid on is what you exclude. Negative keywords stop your ads appearing for irrelevant searches — "free", "DIY", competitors' names, job seeker queries. Without a negative keyword list, a significant portion of every Malaysian business's ad budget goes to clicks from people who were never going to buy.
